As the main objective of our institution is to enhance the talents and skills of students, we push our students to always pursue excellence in all they do and this has incited the interest of the organizers of the Accra Fashion Week 2017 who have chosen RIOHS / students to open its October event called “Summer / Harmattan 2017”. This event would be held at the new Providence Events Center opp. La Palm Royal Hotel, near Trade Fair on the 5th of October 2017 from 6pm to 8:00pm.
Accra Fashion Week as we know is the prime resource for fashion news and information in Africa. With its maiden event in 2016, Accra Fashion Week has managed to maintain the interests of not only fashion designers but the public at large with its worldwide creativity and largest compilation of foreign designers to showcase in a country for a single event. This year’s event is to celebrate 60years of independence and style in Ghana while featuring over 30 designers including our students. This we deem a great honour for such an opportunity to expand our students’ relationship with fashion buyers and showcase their unique designs.
With our school’s belief in confidence building in students; enhancing creativity and visual arts through open learning; encouraging students to think in open space and supporting / promoting our students, it is no surprise that we are to open this event.

Just when you think you’ve gotten accustomed to life in Accra with all of its weather-related vacillations, here comes the transition from the dry season to the rainy season. Interestingly, this year has been particularly unpredictable, varying from highs in the 30’s and surprise afternoons that feel like we’re in the Saharan deserts, then veering sharply into colder nights with flurries and/or rain. What part of life is this? And how do you dress for it?
We’re already at that time of the year. The time when the skies unleash its heavy showers upon our motherland. It’s been quite rainy ALL week, presenting you with a fashion challenge. What to wear and how to prepare for going out in the kind of weather that might switch it up with a quickness? And why is it SO challenging to find cute plus size rainy day gear? We’re here to help.
There are some great rainy day gear that we’re happy to shout about, but we’re learning that we need some new accessories and boots! Allow us to share what we’ve got, and what’s on the rainy day radar.
For years we have avoided raincoats – for reasons best known to ourselves. However, when carefully chosen and worn, a real, effective raincoat that can keep you super dry also pass as super cute. It can be hard to find in plus sizes. The coat most coveted in the west currently is the Colombian Plus-Size Pardon My Trench Rain Jacket, which comes in 9 colors and is pretty much decently styled.
A Pair of Rain Boots
You’ll be needing yourself some rain boots as well. Those feet need to be kept dry and warm if you’re on your way to school or work. They seem to be the most ignored aspect of our rainy day apparel. You could always have the regular crocs or hunter boots on to insulate your dainty feet from the “Accra floods” and swap them when you get to your destination with any dry footwear you happened to pack along. Otherwise, you can go for the contemporary chukkas or “chelsea boots”. Those offer great protection as well as compliment your fashion sense and style. The great deal with those is that you wouldn’t have to swap them when you get to your destination, unless they’re awfully soaked up.
Don’t Forget Your Umbrella
Umbrellas can be quite handy, even against the sun if you’re not quite the sunshine lover. When the rains come, they’re the MVP of the season. It’s advisable to keep a spare in your car or at your office, given how unpredictable the rains could be. The only annoying thing about them is the fact that they’re so easy to forget and get left behind. If only they had feelings… But hey, everybody should own an umbrella. There are lots of trendy-handy ones on sale now: the clear bubble Totes umbrella, the undeniably unique Dryzel umbrella and for people that are always on the go, a smaller brolly is the best – something to slide into your purse or rock around your wrist with the attached wristband.
Honestly, the best thing to do on rainy days is to stay indoors until the weather clears up or is at least less threatening. But when you actually do have to be out and about, always stay strapped and use a cab often.
Stay safe guys!
